$285K Awarded in Scholarships at the 9th Annual Joseph Chung Scholarship Award Ceremony
Wednesday, January 27, 2021
On Saturday, January 23, 2021, Primacorp Ventures’ Philanthropy Division celebrated the 9th Annual Joseph Chung Scholarship Award Ceremony over Zoom. Notable dignitaries and educators from across the province gathered together virtually to congratulate and honour these scholarship award recipients. This year, the Joseph Chung Scholarship Fund awarded 114 recipients, with a total of $285,000 dollars in scholarships.
“My wife Susan and I, have the privilege of serving with Drs. Peter and Stephanie on the selection committee for the Joseph Chung Scholarship Fund,” said Bill Blaney, COO of Coram Deo Foundation. “As the recipients can testify, the application process is detailed and requires effort to complete. Every application is thoroughly reviewed and vetted. In 2013, we had 23 recipients, and this year, we celebrate 114 recipients with scholarships being given of $285,000.”
This year’s ceremony was celebrated a little differently, due to the pandemic, however the attendance was commendable with an impressive list of guest speakers: The Honourable Stockwell Day; Consul General Byung-won Chung, Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Vancouver; Santa Ono, President & Vice-Chancellor of UBC; Dr. Michael Stevenson, Former President of SFU; Dr. Mark Husbands, President of Trinity Western University; and Port Moody-Coquitlam MP Nelly Shin. The Vancouver Zion Mission Choir also graced the event with a beautiful rendition of Cornerstone and the Vancouver Zion Mission Children’s Choir performed the Korean and Canadian national anthems.
“Through COVID, I know a lot of us are wondering what will happen to our futures,” said Primacorp Chairman, Dr. Peter Chung. “However, I encourage you to go through the storm and look for more opportunities with your post-secondary education.”
The Joseph Chung Scholarship Fund – co-founded by Primacorp Ventures’ Chairman, Dr. Peter Chung and his wife Dr. Stephanie Chung – was established in honour of their late son, Joseph, who died unexpectedly at the age of 32. For nearly a decade, the Joseph Chung Scholarship Fund has been presenting scholarships to students they feel will best honour Joseph’s legacy.
